What Went Wrong? Hollywood Got What They Deserved

Dude wants to know why The Fall Guy, despite being (as my fellow host said on the Gab) reportedly a good movie, failed at the box office.

First off, they sold it as a “Girl Boss lectures an incompetent man” movie, apparently under the impression people wanted to see another one of those vomit-inducing cringe-fests, so the movie was set up to fail by its own publicity.

In a larger sense, modern Hollywood is spending hundreds of millions making mid (at best) movies, hectoring the audience with politics, and voting for this disastrous economy.

All of these are self-inflicted wounds, on top of any other problems caused by streaming, COVID policies (which they supported), and the strikes. This is them reaping what they’ve sowed.

Hollywood is killing its own business. And well-reviewed movies like The Fall Guy are suffering for it.

Nobody From the 70s Has Anything Interesting To Say Anymore

Francis Ford Coppola, the director of Apocalypse Now, has finally completed his 47-years-in-the-making Magnum Opus, Megalopolis.

The trailer is a jumbled and confusing mess, and I’m betting the movie won’t be much better. Why? Baby Boomer politics.

It’s a fable about a historical Roman murder plot, transplanted into a stylized futuristic Sci-Fi New York City, about a group of conspirators out to murder the regressive mayor to prevent a Fascist Republic.

Which is to say, it’s a satire based on the delusions of Vietnam War era thinkers. Even assuming he didn’t fall into the trap of making it all about Trump, doubtful because all political commentary in Left Wing art since 2015 has been about how evil Trump is, his generation has said all they have to say on the subject.

“America suxx” just isn’t that interesting or deep a message.

People need deep moral truths, they hunger for them, and just another “uhh American traditions are fascist” movie doesn’t cut it. WE’VE HEARD IT ALL BEFORE.

FOR SIXTY YEARS. And audiences are hungry for something different.

I predict a bomb, because there’s no way he can make this interesting. It has no moral truth at its core, and so won’t move the audience, and they will stay away in droves. It’ll be just one more mile marker of an industry and artform now devoted primarily to driving itself into obscurity and irrelevancy.

But I’d be happy to be proven wrong.

The Acolyte is Coming Right For Us!

So, like Lucifer’s Hammer, The Acolyte is still headed straight for us.

They do a good job of trying to make it look awesome, but this show is going to be awful. The main character is an assassin who hunts down Jedi because MORALLY COMPLEX and SHADES OF GRAY, like the chart below.

The problem is, Star Wars isn’t morally complex enough to endure this kind of scrutiny.

The Sith blow up planets.

The Jedi blow up Death Stars to stop them from blowing up planets.

Light/Dark Side is vague California semi-spiritualism, and cannot bear the weight of the ethical edifice built atop it.

Unlike JRR Tolkien, George Lucas didn’t bother to think any of these issues through before creating The Force, the Jedi, and the Sith. Other people had to do it for him, in fits and starts over the course of decades, in video games, novels, and the Star Wars TTRPG.

The Acolyte will not be deep, morally complex, or even very interesting. As George Lucas was a step down from Tolkien, so is the creator of this show a step down from Lucas.

Truth Told, The Woke ARE Going Broke

The author of an opinion piece posted this over on Twitter.

In 2021, the platitude “Get Woke, go broke” is dead. Everyone got woke, and no one who got woke went broke. The meme was on life support before 2019. In 2021 its corpse is starting to smell. Did anyone ever believe this? Probably not. And from this point onward we should be honest about our situation, there would be more dignity.

Look, I don’t know what he was thinking of in 2021, but here in 2024, his prognosticatory powers are starting to look a little weak. Let’s recap:

Comics. Everything doom and gloom, to the point that they are beginning to include CHILDREN’S BOOKS in the list of comic books sales in order to juice the numbers. Comic stores are shutting down, people are leaving the industry left and right, and page rates are so low full-time professionals can’t afford dental care.

Hollywood. Current projects in development have dropped by 33%, year over year (400 instead of 600), execs, writers, producers, etc. are all out of jobs, some permanently, Disney lost nearly $1.5 BILLION dollars in one year, and Paramount is so close to collapse the rumor is that Sony is looking at acquiring it.

Video Games. Layoffs in the AAA industry are in the tens of thousands, studios are closing left and right, Square Enix just took a $140 million loss on cancelled projects, and AA games Palworld, Helldivers, and Stellar Blade are eating their lunch.

I don’t know what people are expecting from “get woke, go broke”, but the repercussions of whole industries turning their backs on what their customers want to buy are continuing to echo. The pain is real, and while it is taking longer than people may have expected or wanted, the consequences for Wokism are here and they are BAD.

GoldenEye “Woke” in 1995?

I wanna talk about modern writers, humaning, and why most everything nowadays seems to suck. Let’s start with a tweet.

Is this is a “woke” line? No, but it’s an obnoxiously Feminist line, a real eye roller at the time. Fortunately, once the movie got the stupid out the rest of it was fun, old fashioned James Bond excellence and M had a genuine affection for James. It was the start of the slow seepage of anti-masculine Feminism into the James Bond films that would eventually kill them, but it hadn’t yet poisoned them entirely.

The writers didn’t hate James Bond, and they didn’t hate the audience.

“Woke” always hates the audience, and it always hates the characters, situations, and history of whatever movies, TV shows, comics, book series it’s working with. Fine, call it the canon, the lore, the IP if you must. Woke hates it, and wants it changed.

The movies, TV shows, comics, books being made now are almost without exception utterly devoid of humanity. The characters don’t act like people, because Woke writers don’t know how to human.

We’ve replaced wisdom with ideology, replaced truth with lies, and thus they have no power to move or inspire.

Woke wants to replace the lore, rewrite the canon, and destroy the IP in order to preach about their ideology, in order to recite their litany of lies. They have a series of checkboxes, ever mutating checkboxes, each work must tick off. And in order to do so, characters cease to act like people, even fictional people, and instead act like slogan-spouting robots.

So no, M wasn’t Woke, because she still acted like a human being, not a Woke girlboss. And James Bond wasn’t humiliated, derided, despised, made to look like a tool and a fool. He was still the hero.

Woke won’t let James Bond be the hero anymore.
